Santa Patrona de nosotras las sucias
While searching for pre-Hispanic representations related to fertility, I came across Tlazolteotl. Tlazolteotl is a deity of Huaxtec origin. Various friars and clergymen associated her with lust and infidelity. Sometimes described as male, she is the lady of sex. Called the “eater of dirty things,” her name translates to “goddess of dirty carnality.” She is also considered the mother of fertility, both agricultural and human. Mother of medicine, she was the protector of midwives, who attended both births and abortions.
In codices, she was depicted in the position of giving birth or sometimes defecating because sins related to sexual desire were symbolized by excrement.
Because she was depicted with cotton, Tlazoltéotl is also credited with the invention of weaving and embroidery.
